Power Protection Technician

Horizon is recruiting for a self-motivated high performing individual to fill the role of Power Protection Technician. This role is based in Palmerston North.

As a member of the technical team, the Power Protection Technician is responsible for providing specialist technical services to the Network, operations and contracting areas.

The successful candidate must be a NZ Registered Electrician and hold or be working towards a technical qualification in electrical/electronic/communications engineering (or experience equivalent).

Qualifications

  • NZ Registered Electrician
  • Working towards a technical qualification in electrical/electronic/communications engineering (or experience equivalent)
  • Electrical industry awareness training preferred
  • Familiar with industry safe work practices
  • Current Manual NZ Drivers Licence

Experience Demonstrated experience in relevant trade area required:

  • 2 to 5 years in associated activities • PLC, SCADA, protection and communications knowledge
  • Knowledge of generation and distribution equipment (low and high voltage)
  • Good understanding of network systems analysis.
  • Good knowledge of VHF/UHF radio operating systems and subsequent maintenance requirements
  • Good knowledge of IP based technology
  • Thorough knowledge of the substation servicing and maintenance requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of protection design schemes and subsequent testing requirements
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to plan the installation and maintenance of radio and fibre optic communications systems, computers, protection of HV transformers and switchgear, load control and SCADA equipment, including all Zone Substation equipment
  • Knowledge of all appropriate industry rules and regulations
  • Thorough knowledge of health and safety requirements in the electricity industry
